Alaska Shelter Dog Race Team

The goal of the Alaska Shelter Dog Race Team project is to find caring, permanent homes for previously unwanted sleddogs. We hope to reduce the numbers of sleddogs coming into our animal shelters by promoting kennel health, positive training techniques, and focused evaluation.

The Race Team will be composed entirely of dogs from Alaskan Animal Shelters. They will be trained and cared for in a positive, pro-active environment at Crazy Dog Kennels by professional musher John Schandelmeier.

The team will compete in various races throughout the 2004-05 season with the main focus being the 2005 Iditarod or the 2005 Yukon Quest.

The dogs listed on this site will be available for adoption directly through Crazy Dog Kennels.

Hi Everyone; It is mid-June and we have been amiss in updating our news. We have the entire kennel at our Maclaren River dogyard for the summer. It is a great place for dogs; 500 swallows live on the Maclaren River bridge and keep the area bug-free for about a mile around. Drainage in the dogyard is perfect; it can rain for 40 days and 40 nights and there will be no mud, no puddles.
We have a new puppy pen built, 20 new houses and an old golf cart for a training rig. The dogs have been running regularly; we had 4" of snow on the 2nd of June that stayed for a couple days and last evening it was 40*. Summer on the Maclaren. We are having a few visitors that come in to take pictures of the dogs, so some of the crazier shelter animals are getting socialized. Stop by; dogs are the focus here, but it is summer and we can also talk Canoeing, Hiking, Fishing, and Sight-seeing. Lots of ducks and ptarmigan this year in our area.
Thank you. John and Zoya

Policy changes within Second Chance League now require foster trainers to either adopt or make available for immediate adoption if foster dogs are kept longer that 60 days. Due to this change we will be formally adopting Flash, Streak, Cookie, Bilbo, Red II, Teddy, Snoopy, and Penny. Technically their status has changed but they may still be available for placement at the end of the race season. Periodically throughout the season there will be trained shelter dogs available through this race program. Anyone who has need of a dog trained for specific purposes may contact us though this website.
